Come out and join the International Trade Law Student Association (ITLSA) for a career-focused event with some of Ottawa’s leading international trade and investment lawyers.

We will be discussing what type of work is done by legal practitioners in this exciting field, plus what career opportunities are available and how you can tap into them – from large, full-service business law firms, to smaller firms that specialize in international trade and investment law, to the federal government’s Trade Law Bureau, to international organizations such as the World Trade Organization (WTO).

PANEL: Legal practitioners from both public and private sectors will speak candidly about their professional experiences and answer your career-related questions.

1) Professor Debra Steger, University of Ottawa
Debra Steger is one of Canada's leading authorities on international trade policy and law. An architect of the World Trade Organization and a senior negotiator for Canada during the Uruguay Round trade negotiations, Professor Steger was also the founding Director and first Chief Legal Adviser to the WTO Appellate Body from 1995-2001.

2) Paul Conlin, Partner, Ogilvy Renault LLP
Paul D. Conlin focuses on international trade and investment, WTO disputes, trade remedies, customs law, export controls and government contracting. He regularly appears before the Canadian International Trade Tribunal, and is one of very few lawyers in private practice in Canada to have argued before a WTO dispute settlement panel.

3) Wendy Wagner, Associate, Gowling Lafleur Henderson LLP
Wendy Wagner represents clients in matters involving NAFTA, WTO, anti-dumping and countervail, export & import controls and all aspects of customs. She advises pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical clients on issues pertaining to the WTO TRIPS Agreement. She has appeared as counsel on trade related matters before the Canadian International Trade Tribunal and the Federal Court of Canada.

4) Carolyn Elliott-Magwood, Counsel,Trade Law Bureau, Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade (DFAIT)
Carolyn Elliott-Magwood works in the investment and services section of the Trade Law Bureau (JLT). Her works includes defending Canada's position in NAFTA Chapter 11 claims and giving legal advice to Canadian representative at free trade and investment protection treaty negotiations.
